A message from our sponsors, City of Parksville
Welcoming Brant to Parksville Beaches
The Black Brant geese feeding along Parksville shores are on a remarkable migration journey from California and Mexico to northern nesting grounds. Our beaches provide an abundant food source for geese, which need to gain weight and strength before making another long non-stop flight. A disturbance, no matter how small can have drastic impacts on the geese and for this reason, our beaches are closed to dogs on and off-leash for March and April.
Amazing sandy beaches and picture postcard views
We are always excited to welcome Brant to the shores of Parksville Bay and Rathtrevor beaches, two of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Residents and visitors to our region love these spectacular sandy beaches with picture-perfect view of the Salish Sea. At low tide, the ocean recedes about a kilometre from shore, revealing warm beaches which seem to stretch forever. From our beaches, you can see across the Salish Sea to the mainland.
We encourage residents and visitors to enjoy the best beaches of Parksville. Bring your bathing suit, plan a picnic, bring along your skimboard, standup paddle board, kayak, and of course your sandcastle building skills.
Parksville Bay beach is a remarkable sandy, walk-on beach perfect for swimming and picnicking. The Parksville Community Park features a gathering plaza, waterfront walkway, the popular Ventureland playground with splash park, beach volleyball courts, skatepark, sports fields, outdoor gym, kite field, as well as many festivals and special events throughout the summer.
Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, one of the best vacation destinations on Vancouver Island, offers majestic old-growth woodland, beautiful ocean sunsets, and a wide, sandy beach with campsites nestled among the trees. At low tide, the receding ocean exposes tide pools ready for exploration and when the tide rolls in over sunbaked sand, the warmed water is perfect for swimming.
The City of Parksville, with a population nearing 14,000, is an active community blending young families, professionals, retirees, long-time residents, and new arrivals who choose to live in Parksville for the quality life and the region’s natural environment. An excellent combination of retirement, business and recreational opportunities, facilities, and services, ensure Parksville is the best place to live, work, visit, and prosper. Welcome Back, Brant Geese!
Every year, we are proud to welcome back the brant geese to our community and for the opportunity to celebrate the Brant Wildlife Festival, an amazing event that showcases the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us.
Taking place during the brant geese migration, this event brings together thousands of people to learn about and connect with nature. There’s plenty to see and do, including nature tours, workshops, book swap, art show, film night and much more – all while learning about the natural environment we’re lucky enough to call home. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!
Our beautiful beaches are an important stop on the brant geese’s extraordinary migration from Mexico and California to their summer home in the north. This springtime stopover is important for these remarkable waterfowl. They feed on our local eelgrass, green algae and herring roe, gaining weight and strength for their migration to the Alaskan Peninsula and onward to their nesting grounds.
Like all visitors to our beaches, we want our feathered friends to enjoy their stay and have a safe journey to their next destination. Because of the importance of our beaches to their migration, we close our local beaches to dogs for two months. Any disturbance to these birds and their feeding can have a significant impact on their migration. Please obey all signage and enjoy our brant geese friends from a distance.
Please come join us as we honour the beauty and the wonder of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region.
