DESCRIPTION:Join Deb Jones for an informative education session on Rain Gardens at the Qualicum Beach Library and tour a local rain garden within Qualicum Beach.\n“Rain gardens” are sprouting up everywhere.  But surely every garden on Vancouver Island is a rain garden, given the amount of rainfall we get?  Not quite!  Learn exactly what rain gardens are, the many benefits they provide and why they’re essential for reducing the triple hazard of drought, wildfire and flood.  We’ll take a photo tour of some of North Delta’s 29 school and community rain gardens, get ideas for creating our own easy rain gardens — then for those who wish, walk or drive to nearby Memorial Ave Rain Garden and discuss how it’s doing.\nDeborah Jones has a BA in Urban Studies, a Masters of Library Science, and worked for Vancouver Public Library for over 30 years.\nDeb serves as volunteer Rain Gardens Coordinator for the Streamkeepers, overseeing the maintenance of 29 school and community rain gardens created since 2006 in collaboration with the City of Delta, Delta School District, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Nature Trust of BC and others. She also advises the Nature Trust on their rain garden grant program.\nWe are pleased to dovetail our activities with the Regional District of Nanaimo during Water to Earth Month which kicks off on World Water Day March 22nd and ends on Earth Day April 22nd.  This year’s them of ‘Accelerating Change’ with a focus on partnerships and cooperation and ‘Invest in our Planet.’  Residents are encouraged to take part in Water to Earth Month by registering for one of the scheduled events, visiting the RDN Team WaterSmart Get Involved page for online activities, and checking out the RDN’s social media for fun contests.https://www.getinvolved.rdn.ca/team-watersmart\n \n
